Troubleshooting

Audio, recording and transcription problems

Last updated · 2 min read

Short answer

Most recording problems are microphone permissions: click the lock or microphone icon in your browser's address bar, allow the microphone for duetoday.ai and reload. For poor accuracy, record closer to the speaker with less background noise. For uploaded files that time out, split recordings longer than a couple of hours into shorter parts.

Before you start

  • Find your microphone settings: in Chrome, click the icon left of the address bar, then Site settings. On a Mac, also check System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone.

Steps

  1. Allow the microphone for duetoday.ai in your browser, then reload the page.
  2. Pick the right microphone. In the browser’s site settings, choose the microphone you’re using (for example your headset rather than a webcam).
  3. Close other apps using the mic, such as video-call apps.
  4. Do a short test. Start a recording, say a sentence, and check the transcript appears.
  5. Keep the tab open and the laptop awake for the whole lecture. Plug in the charger.
  6. For uploaded files, split very long recordings into parts and upload each one.

Common messages

MessageWhat to do
”Failed to start live dictation”Allow the microphone and reload.
”Dictation stopped. Please check microphone permission and try again.”Allow the microphone; check no other app is using it.
”Dictation unavailable. Your browser does not support speech dictation here.”Use Chrome or Edge.
”Nothing recorded yet. Record a bit more audio before saving.”No speech was picked up. Check the mic isn’t muted.
”Dictation already active”Stop the other recording or voice note first.
”Transcription timed out before AssemblyAI returned the final transcript”The uploaded file is too long. Split it.
”Could not start voice tutor”Allow the microphone and try again.

Tips for better accuracy

  • Sit near the speaker or put your device near them.
  • Use an external microphone in big lecture halls.
  • Avoid rustling near the microphone.
  • Rename speakers afterwards so the transcript is easier to read.

If something goes wrong

  • The transcript is mostly wrong. The audio is too quiet or noisy. Record closer, or upload the lecturer’s own recording if available.
  • Still not working. Contact support with your browser, device and the message you saw.

Frequently asked questions

Which browser is best for recording?

Chrome or Edge on a laptop. Safari works for most things, but live dictation is most reliable in Chrome.

Can Duetoday transcribe other languages?

Yes, many languages work, but accuracy is best in English. Set your AI Output Language so notes come out in the language you want.

My laptop went to sleep during a lecture. Is the recording lost?

Recording stops when the tab or laptop sleeps. Anything already transcribed is kept in the recorder; choose Resume, then Save recording.
