Uploading and recording

Upload an audio or video recording

Last updated · 2 min read

Short answer

On your dashboard, choose Upload and pick an audio or video file, such as MP3, M4A, WAV, MP4, MOV or WebM. Galileo opens right away while the file is transcribed in the background. When it's done you get a timestamped transcript with speaker labels and chapters, plus a summary, study guide, flashcards and a quiz.

Before you start

  • Supported files: any audio file your browser recognises (for example MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, OGG) and video files such as MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM.
  • Good audio matters. A recording made close to the speaker transcribes far better than one from the back of a large hall.
  • Plan needed: your first upload is free as a preview. More uploads need the 7-day free trial or a subscription.

Steps

  1. Go to your dashboard and choose Upload under Upload Your Own Material.
  2. Pick your recording. You’ll see “Uploading source into Galileo…” with a progress bar. Keep the tab open until the upload reaches 100%.
  3. Galileo opens. The message “Your file will attach there first, then transcription and study generation will continue in the background” means you can carry on.
  4. Wait for the transcript. The progress card shows “Galileo is turning this recording into transcript text”. This usually takes a few minutes.
  5. Open the transcript. Choose the Transcript tab for audio, or the Video tab for video, to read it with timestamps and speaker labels. You can also choose Transcript in the Galileo panel. Chapters split long recordings into sections.
  6. Study it. Read the Summary tab, or choose Flashcards, Quiz, Mindmap, Podcast or Ask AI Tutor in the Galileo panel.

Tips

  • Upload only the audio of a long video if your connection is slow. It’s a much smaller file.
  • Rename speakers in the transcript so your notes say “Professor” instead of “Speaker A”.
  • Click a chapter or a transcript line to jump the player to that moment.
  • We email you when your study kit is ready, so you can close the tab after the upload finishes.

Limits

  • Galileo allows up to 15 minutes to transcribe one file. Very long recordings (several hours) may not finish in time, so split them into parts.
  • Very large video files can fail to upload on slow connections. Upload the audio track, or a compressed copy, instead.
  • One recording per Galileo session.

If something goes wrong

  • “Transcription timed out before AssemblyAI returned the final transcript”. The recording was too long to finish in time. Split it into shorter parts and upload them separately.
  • “No content extracted from source”. The file had no speech we could hear, for example a silent or music-only file.
  • The upload stops part way. Check your connection and try again. Failed uploads don’t use up your free preview.
  • More help: audio and transcription problems.

Frequently asked questions

How long does transcription take?

Usually a few minutes, depending on the length of the recording. Galileo allows up to 15 minutes for a file to be transcribed. You can leave the page and we'll email you when your study kit is ready.

Can it tell different speakers apart?

Yes. Transcripts include speaker labels such as Speaker A and Speaker B. You can rename a speaker by choosing their label in the transcript.

Which video formats work?

Common formats including MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM. Duetoday uses the sound from the video, so the picture isn't analysed.

Can I record instead of uploading?

Yes. Choose Record on the dashboard to record a lecture live. See the guide to recording a lecture.
