Research the web with Galileo's Research mode

Last updated · 1 min read

Short answer

In a Galileo session, choose Research next to the message box (it turns green), then ask your question. Galileo searches the internet, shows the steps it took and answers with links to its sources. You can also start from the dashboard by choosing Research before you send your question.

Before you start

  • Plan needed: the 7-day free trial or a subscription. Research isn’t part of the free preview.

Steps

  1. Start from the dashboard or a session.
    • On the dashboard, choose Research under the prompt box. The placeholder changes to “Ask a research question, compare sources, or investigate a topic…”.
    • In a Galileo session, choose Research next to the message box. Hovering shows “Searches the internet to research sources, claims, and topics.”
  2. Ask your research question. For example “Compare the main viewpoints on universal basic income” or “Find strong source directions for a paper about urban heat islands”.
  3. Follow the research steps. Galileo shows what it searched and read as it works.
  4. Read the answer and its sources. Open the links to check them yourself.
  5. Turn it into notes or a draft. Ask “Turn these sources into clean research notes with claims and evidence”, or use Draft on the dashboard for an outline or literature review.

Tips

  • Narrow your question. “Effects of social media on attention spans in teenagers, studies since 2020” gets better sources than “social media”.
  • Ask for counterarguments so your essay covers both sides.
  • Turn Research off (choose it again) when you want Galileo to stick to your uploaded material.

If something goes wrong

  • No links in the answer. Check that Research is switched on (green) before you send.
  • A link doesn’t open or doesn’t say what Galileo claimed. Don’t use it. Ask Galileo to find another source.

Frequently asked questions

How is Research different from a normal answer?

A normal answer uses your uploaded material and Galileo's general knowledge. Research also searches the web for current sources and links to them.

Can I use the sources in my essay?

Use them as a starting point. Open each link, check it's reliable, and cite the original source, not Galileo.

Where do I find my research chats later?

Under History, in Galileo Sessions. Filter by Research to see only research chats.
